Rich Iott Defends Nazi Re-Enactments
Ohio Republican Says he Did Nothing Wrong by Wearing Nazi Uniform, Says he Wanted to Educate the Public

Rich Iott told The Associated Press in an interview Monday that he took part in the historical re-enactments to educate the public, and does not agree with the Nazis' views or their actions against Jews.
Asked whether it was wrong to wear a Nazi uniform, Iott said: "I don't see anything wrong about educating the public about events that happened. And that's the whole purpose of historical re-enacting."
Iott faces Democratic incumbent Rep. Marcy Kaptur in northwest Ohio in the November election.
The Atlantic magazine reported Friday that Iott had participated in the re-enactments wearing a Waffen-SS uniform.
Iott said Monday he was in a re-enactment group called Wiking for three or four years - though he believed his name remained on the group's roster for longer. He said he and his then-teenage son had joined as a part of a shared interest in history.
The House Republicans' No. 2 leader, Eric Cantor of Virginia, on Sunday said he repudiates Iott's actions and would not support someone who would dress in Nazi attire. His remarks on "Fox News Sunday" came after Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida cited Iott as an example of Republican candidates with extreme views.
"You know good and well that I don't support anything like that," said Cantor, who is Jewish.
Iott said Cantor had no information or background about his re-enacting.
"What Cantor did is exactly the illustration of why people are disgusted with politicians," Iott said. "He made comments and took a position that was good for him at the time, regardless of whether it was good for anyone else or good for the voters."
Iott said he has been involved in re-enactments on and off for roughly 35 years. He said he has dressed as an American soldier for World War I and World War II re-enactments, as well as a soldier from each side of the Civil War.
Iott said he could not recall when he and his son joined the Wiking group but that he was no longer involved.
"Never, in any of my re-enacting of military history, have I meant any disrespect to anyone who served in our military or anyone who has been affected by the tragedy of war, especially the Jewish Community," Iott said in a statement Saturday.
During the peak of his involvement in the early 2000s, Iott said he dressed up about a half dozen times a year at the most. He said he wore the Nazi uniform in battle re-enactments, presentations at schools and public events.
Asked what he said while wearing the Nazi uniform in the schools, he said, "We talked about the atrocities that were committed and it was a horrible, horrible part of history. But we can't forget about it or, you know, sweep it under the rug. Because those who forget about history are destined to repeat it."

- There is yet another photo of Lott, in full Nazi regalia, posing with "Herr Schneider, a REAL Vet of 5.SS 'Wiking'!" ... So I suppose, given the fact that he dresses up like a Nazi, and hangs out with Nazis, that when Lott says that he is not a Nazi, he apparently means it only because the party was disbanded after WW2, so he didn't get a chance to join up... his denial smacks of David Duke, and Pat Buchanan claiming they are not racists.

- the huge difference is the man is running for a congressional seat. he is not a professional actor, nor a professional film extra. common sense would dictate, if you have political ambitions, to clean up your image from the get go. you would know that as a candidate you might be offending u.s. ww2 combat veterans, former and current military personnel. if anything, the man might be revealing that he has no common sense. he does not deserve one single vote but betting that many will overlook his leaning toward anything nazis. too bad for ohio, or good if there is a huge population that is pro-nazis.

- If a democrat would have done the reenactment have no doubt that the tea baggers would be here saying "see ? I told you so!!" so give it to them and bleed them with this.

- There are reenactors all over the world, who don period clothing and use period weapons to reenact historical battles. There need to be bad guys for the good guys at a battle reenactment, for the battle to take place. No body dressed as a Red Coat or a Confederate, or a German soldier for their opponents to fight, then no battle. No living history, no understanding of what the adversaries looked like, no educational benefit to the spectators, NOTHING. To take a man to task for role playing at one of these events is absolute garbage and the worst type of yellow press. How dare you impugn him for a hobby that educates the world to the reality of what the Second World War looked like at the soldiers level. This is the absolute lowest type of trash reporting. Do not movie stars dress up and pretend to be someone or something they are not for the entertainment and/or education of the masses??? Are they Nazis?? Is the next man who dresses up as Robert E. Lee, for a movie, to be called a racist bigot or proponent of slavery for Black Americans?? The person who wrote this unwarranted smear needs to publicly step forward and acknowledge the wrong done this gentleman.

- His hanging out with Nazis war criminals, such as "Herr Schneider, a REAL Vet of 5.SS 'Wiking'!" of which there are photos, shows your attempt to be his apologist to be folderol, and suggests you are yet another closet Nazi sympathizer, Just like Lott... If the man who dresses as Robert E. Lee in your allegory counts virulent racists among his friends, as Lott apparently counts Herr Schneider, then it is at least prudent to assume that he has racist attitudes.
- Didn't Tom Cruise just wear a Nazi uniform in some movie? Oh, my God, Tom Cruise is A Nazi???????

- What is the point of such a re-enactment? It's not as if one can't pick up a book or even a movie to education one's self.

- Ridiculous - if everyone dressed up for some reenactment but only wanted to wear the good guy uniforms then the reenactment would be awfully one sided.
